VAT refunds in Bulgaria and across the EU

VAT paid abroad on business costs is often recoverable, but only if the claim is right and on time. We are your single point of contact for VAT refunds in Bulgaria and every EU member state.

Who it’s for

  • Transport and logistics companies
  • Businesses attending trade fairs and events in the EU
  • Foreign companies with costs in Bulgaria but no sales here

Businesses regularly pay VAT in countries where they are not registered: on trade-fair costs, fuel for trucks, hotels or services bought locally. In most cases that VAT can be reclaimed from the tax authority of the country where it was paid, provided the expense was for your business, you make no taxable supplies there, and you have no place of business in that country.

Rules, forms and deadlines differ from country to country, and claims are often rejected on formalities. We prepare and submit the claims, answer the authorities’ questions and follow each refund until it is paid. If a refund is refused, our disputes team can appeal.

Common questions

What is the deadline for an EU VAT refund claim?

For businesses established in the EU, claims under the EU refund procedure must be submitted by 30 September of the year after the one in which the VAT was paid. A late claim usually means a lost refund.

What do I need to provide?

Copies of the invoices, showing at least the invoice number, date, supplier details and the VAT charged, plus basic information about your business. We tell you exactly what is missing before anything is filed.
